Is Watching VR Porn A Case Of Cheating?

What constitutes cheating on one’s romantic partner? Opinions vary. Some say it is an actual sexual intercourse, others say a kiss with someone else is enough to break off a relationship. There are also fantasies that everybody has. And what about all these types of emotional attachments – cases when no physical contact is involved, while the bond with someone else transcends the boundaries of friendship. And finally, is watching porn the same as cheating, in particular, when you do it with a VR headset?

The Roots Of Concern

You could be perfectly loyal to your partner physically but still think about another human – a celebrity or someone you know personally – while being intimate. Such thoughts commonly cause people to start exploring the world of porn. Of course, many would be frustrated to know that their partner is aroused by watching other people engaged in sexual acts. A few of them claim this as cheating because the partner is turned on by someone else. Such grievances have traditionally applied to any pornographic material.

Nowadays, when the porn industry has adopted VR technology, its content implies something more than passive observing. It offers a very realistic view, and it is often shot from a man’s or a woman’s perspective, making a viewer witness the act through the eyes of an active participant. Hence, the virtual porn character is pleasing your partner right there in the bed you share, with sound and tactile sensations, which means full sexual immersion. It may even be boosted with interactive sex toys. However, should be a deal breaker shattering committed couples? It is no wonder the question becomes a subject of heated debates. There are two sides:

1. The Viewer’s Perspective

A lover of VR porn may say there is no cheating technically because they are not having sex with another human, it is all virtual fiction, etc. They can also claim it is drastically different from real-life flirting or sleeping with random people from Tinder, which is definitely true.

2. The Partner’s Perspective

Critics say VR porn is not some 5-minute cell phone video, it is a full-length experience that feels very real. For some spouses, a VR-affair is just as hurtful as suggestive communication with someone via social media and outright betrayal in real life.

The Bottom Line

In general, communication is the key to a lasting and happy relationship. For this reason, the issue of pornography should be discussed if one of the partners is a consumer of such content.  Watching it should constitute cheating if you believe it does so. But VR porn is a consequence rather than a cause. It indicates a need to fulfill sexual desires outside of the relationship, which may point to issues you could agree to resolve. And if you both appreciate the immersion experience, VR-technology allows threesomes!
