Show Me Gold Prospector

August 2010 Newsletter

The August 14, 2010 meeting will be at 11:00 am at the Wellington Fair Building.  The directions to the building are: Take I-70 to the Odessa Exit (exit 37).  This is Highway 131, take 131 north, cross 24 Hwy into Wellington.  The Wellington Fair Building is on the northeast corner of the square.

July Auction:  First of all, we want to thank both Doug Foster and Tom Gabriel for their “expertise” auctioneering skills at our July meeting.   Fun was had by all and they definitely kept us all entertained!  Some of the items up for auction included geodes from Sheffler’s Rock Shop, autographed gold pans and a gold nugget.  Proceeds from the auction went to the food pantry in DeSoto, KS.

August 14 Meeting:    Judy tells us that we’ll be grilling pork steaks (meat is provided by the chapter).  Of course, we’ll still need your delicious side dishes, desserts and drinks.   At the end of the day, remember to take any leftovers home with you.

Do you remember the raffle our chapter held for the St. Luke Church Youth Group earlier this year?  Some of their leaders and youth will be presenting a slide show at our August meeting featuring the mission work they did while on their trip to Waterloo, Iowa this summer.  They assisted in repairing properties of some elderly, poverty stricken and others in need.

Dave Arnold, GPAA State Director of Texas, plans to join us at our August meeting.  He is bringing our chapter a five gallon bucket full of concentrates from the El Paso chapter!   He suggests that we go through it together at one of our future outings and do a split.   Some of us met Dave at the GPAA Annual Rendezvous that was held in Stanton, AZ in February, and we know you’ll enjoy getting to know him!

Speaking of outings, some of our chapter members have gone up to a private claim in Alaska to prospect for gold during July!   We’re anxious to see all of their gold finds and you know they’ll probably have some pretty interesting tales to tell us!

Some other small groups from our chapter have headed to a couple of claims  in Colorado during part of July to do some gold prospecting.   Maybe at least one of them will bring back that big nugget they’ve been dreaming about!

Regular Monthly Raffle:  Remember we have a raffle at each of regular meetings and we really appreciate all of you who continue to contribute items each month.   We’ll be featuring more gold prospecting related items starting in August.

Shirt Order:  We understand that Steve Wolak, our store keeper, will be placing another order for shirts starting in August.  He is checking on prices for both the blue shirts and gray t-shirts and he should have this info when we meet.

The Sheffler Rock Shop that specializes in geodes and fossils has reopened in Alexandria, MO.  The shop has displays of mineral specimens and cutting materials.  Besides the shop, there is a geode mine digging area where you can dig your own geodes.  The address is R.R. 1 – Box 172, Alexandria, MO 63439 and their phone number is 660-754-1134.  It is located 6 miles south of Alexandria at the Junction of Hwy 61 & 27.  L.D. Tripp visited the shop recently and brought some nice looking geodes to our July meeting.

Final Thought:  Happy prospecting to you until we meet again!  Carol Coffman (in the absence of Roenna, who will be returning from Alaska around the day this newsletter goes to press).

SPECIAL NOTE:  Sharon Foster will be bring her microscope and lap top for anyone to get a close up of their fine gold, coins or any other relic.
